FA Youth Cup Preliminary
Round 10 September 2008 Sheffield FC 6 - 1 Bradford
(Park Avenue) FC
Danny Wood almost got Sheffield away to a perfect
start when Keenan in the Bradford goal missed a back pass but couldn't control the
rebound and the ball went out for a goal kick. Andy Gascoigne then set up Jerome Jones with a super pass into space but he hadn't seen it coming and the opportunity was lost. Sheffield
had imposed themselves on the game in the early minutes and a sweeping move started by Stratford
at left back involving new boy Karim Eid found Gascoigne who finished with a good strike
from close range to give the home side the advantage. Bradford were also playing some neat football and Gelsthorpe did well showing his experience but Bradford got a corneron 9 minutes which the Sheffield lads dealt
with fairly comfortably. Sheffield got forward again and Jon Askew was playing well
in midfield, and he got a shot away which went wide and then earned a free kick which Gascoigne took but which was cleared;
the ball came to Stratford on the left but his dangerous looking cross evaded everyone. Matt
Roma was playing well at centre half but then Bradford 's McTigue got in a fierce
low cross which Turton did well to clear. Gascoigne then had a half chance and Eid
sprung the offside trap but was foiled by Keenan who did really well one on one. Somewhat against the run of play Bradford
equalised when Brown capitalised on a defensive mix up to score an easy goal. Immediately
following the re-start Sheffield restored their advantage; Gelsthorpe got the ball to Jones who got a good ball across to
Gascoigne who got in on goal and scored his second from close range. Sheffield played the remainder of the half in the ascendancy,
with Karim Eid going close and Gascoigne prevented from getting his hat-trick by a super save from Keenan.
Sheffield
started the second half in the best way possible when from the kick off, Gascoigne found Eid with a good cross across the
6 yard box which the new striker slammed home to make it 3 - 1. Danny Wood was trying
desparately to get on the score sheet but put a 20 yard strike over the bar. At the other end Brown
got a shot away but it was wide. Gascoigne secured his hat-trick in the 53rd minute when he received the ball in midfield
and had too much strength for his marker and scored with a good left foot shot. Eid then received the ball out from the back
and played a good pass to Wood who made a surging run on goal but his shot was across the goal and wide. Gascoigne also got
Wood through with a good headed flick on but there was just too much on it for a real scoring opportunity. The next goal came
on 67 minutes and the game was turning into a one man show; Eid got the ball on the edge of the area but as he was lining
up his shot the ball was knocked away from him; it fell into the path of that man Gascoigne who, following up, fired home
from 15 yards. Bradford were still providing game opposition and Roma was called into action to prevent Wilson getting
through on goal. Turton also had to make a good save. Wood and Roma then both had attempts on goal but it was Gascoigne who
completed the scoring on 80 minutes when he slammed home a great shot from the edge of the area.
The scoreline was
nothing less than the players deserved; although it was Andy Gascoigne's night there were several good performances from several
new players and these lads are bound to get another chance soon. Next up is Garforth Town
on Wednesday 24th September at the Bright Finance Stadium.
